SUMMARY A Comparison of Laryngeal Mask UniqueTM versus SupremeTM for Edentulous Geriatric Patients Aim of this study : Edentulous patients aged over 65 constitute 60% of patients. It is more difficult to perform bag-mask ventilation in edentulate patients than in patients with intact dentition. Newer supraglottic airway devices have modifications to improve seal and to separate the respiratory and the gastrointestinal tracts. Laringeal mask Supreme is a new, single-use; latex-free, laryngeal mask airway with gastric access is made of medical grade polyvynil chloride. It combines features of laringeal mask Fastrach, laringeal mask ProSeal and laringeal mask Unique. We aimed to compare the laringeal mask Unique with Supreme in assessing success of first attempt, oropharyngeal leak pressure, ease of insertion and time for insertion secondly assessing hemodynamic effects on laryngeal mask insertion. Material and Methods: Methods a total of 60 patients of ASA group I, II and III were included in our study. Regarding the airway device used during surgery, the patients were randomly assigned into two groups: Group Supreme and Group Unique. Intended measurements were recorded for each groups. Results: Laryngeal mask Supreme is superior to Unique because of first attempt success rate. There was no difference between the two groups in oropharyngeal leak pressures, ease of insertion, insertion time and hemodynamic parameters. Oropharyngeal leak pressures of laryngeal mask Unique and Supreme is 17.10 cmH2O and 20.56 cmH2O, respectively. Time of insertion for laryngeal mask Unique and Supreme is 11.87 s and 10.04 s, ease of insertion is %100 and %90, respectively. Conclusion: The efficacy and safety of each supraglottic devices are the same at short surgical procedures for edentulous geriatric patients but the laryngeal mask Supreme is superior to Unique because of its ease of insertion at the first attempts (p<0.05).
Key words: Laryngeal mask Supreme, oropharyngeal leak pressure
