In our study we found results suggesting that chronic hepatitis C patients with normal ALT levels are more in woman gender and that they have lower ferritine levels and milder histological findings. Also, we showed that there was a significantly inverse relationship between viral load and average ALT level and a direct proportion between estimated infection period and ALT level and severity of liver damage. We determined the threshold ALT level to separate chronic hepatitis C women patients from control women patients as 22 IU/L with 87.5% sensitivity and 98% specificity. A better threshold value for ALT was determined as 32 IU/L with 100% specificity and 80.8% sensitivity in healthy men without chronic hepatitis C infection.
These new data obtained from our study may contribute to the ongoing discussions by providing new reference ranges for ALT measurement used in clinical applications at chronic hepatitis C patients.
