In this study, the morphologic features and essential oils compositions of two varieties, (var. kotschyanus and var. glabrescens) belonging to the Thymus kotschyanus collected from Elazığ vicinity were determined and both taxa were compared in view of these features. The essential oils of these samples were obtained by hydrodistillation and qualitative and quantitative differences and similarities were determined. Essential oil composition of both varieties were found similar by the main compounds. While qualitative differences were not more observed, quantitative differences was important between both varieties essential oil in view of essence components. The dominant components observed in the essential oil Thymus kotschyanus var. glabrescens and var. kotschyanus were thymol (% 59.9 – 30.4), p- cymene (%8.52 2.10), borneol (% 4.56 5.23), 1.8. cineole (%3.38- 4.13) and beta caryophyllene (%1.50- 2.89) respectively. In both varieties essential oils studied, monoterpene components were found dominant while the amount of other group components were lower. In this study, the results obtained from morphological and chemical characterization two varieties belonging to Thymus kotschyanus will be doing contributions for the morphology, chemotaxonomy and systematics of Thymus genus.
